At Graceful Balance Wellness, we understand that trauma can leave lasting impacts on both the mind and body. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a powerful tool we use to help our clients process and heal from traumatic experiences. This page will guide you through what EMDR therapy is, how it works, and what you can expect from the process.
EMDR Therapy
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. This form of therapy uses bilateral stimulation—such as tapping or specific eye movements—to help the brain process and integrate traumatic memories. Originally developed for treating PTSD, EMDR has been proven effective for a wide range of conditions by unlocking "stuck" information and facilitating healthy reprocessing of experiences.
What happens in EMDR?
Our brains are designed to adapt and process information, but trauma can disrupt this process. EMDR therapy helps re-establish the brain’s natural healing mechanisms by using bilateral stimulation while the client focuses on traumatic memories. This technique helps integrate and file away these memories correctly, reducing their emotional impact and helping the individual move forward.
How does EMDR Work?
Benefits of EMDR Therapy
Each EMDR session typically lasts about an hour. The number of sessions needed varies based on the individual's experiences and specific needs. Your therapist will guide you through the eight phases of EMDR, ensuring you feel safe and supported throughout the process.
