When you think of counseling, you might think of a therapist, the guidance counselor at your high school, the academic advisor at your university, or something else. Counseling can be applied to a host of things, but sometimes it can be unclear what it actually means. So, what is nutrition counseling?
At its roots, nutrition counseling is what it sounds like: counseling from a health professional with expertise in nutrition to help an individual develop healthy eating habits, make healthy food choices, and better understand their body.
One of the most basic things we can do to take care of ourselves is to understand our body and what it needs. However, this isn’t always something we’re taught, and it can often be overlooked in our everyday lives and health regimen.
Making healthy choices in all areas of our lives, especially our nutrition habits, can lead to a longer and healthier life and decreased risk for certain illnesses and diseases. Nutrition counseling can be especially helpful for those with pre-existing conditions, chronic illness, or food allergies/sensitivities.
What can you expect from nutrition counseling?
While care varies from counselor to counselor, these are some common things you can expect from nutrition counseling:
- You and your nutrition counselor (often a registered dietitian) will go over your medical history, general health, and why you’re seeking nutrition counseling.
- You’ll learn why nutrition matters. This also often includes looking at how to construct a healthy, well-rounded meal with essential nutrients, as well as what food items provide different nutrients.
- Your counselor will show you how to make mindful choices about nutrition and other healthy habits.
- Creating a personalized nutrition plan is also something you can expect. Based on your needs and goals, your counselor/dietitian will help you create a practical, easy-to-implement plan for your journey to better health.
- Receive support, encouragement and expertise as you’re guided by an expert who can tailor plans, meals and other recommendations to your specific needs, obstacles and goals.
Nutrition counseling is about so much more than the food you eat. It’s about understanding your body and fueling it well, so you can show up for yourself and others. Taking care of your body, starting with your nutrition, can help you lead a healthier, active life for years to come.
