Anxiety can feel like a constant, overwhelming presence in your life. It creeps into your thoughts, influences your decisions, and makes you question your worth and abilities. Many of my clients have come a long way in their journey toward healing, and when they reflect on where they’ve been, they often wish they could go back and share some hard-earned wisdom with their past selves.

If you’re currently struggling with anxiety, here’s what my clients would tell their past, less healthy selves. It might be exactly what you need to hear today.

“It’s okay to ask for help.”

One of the biggest hurdles in managing anxiety is the belief that you have to handle it all on your own. My clients often share that they wish they could go back and tell their past selves that asking for help isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s a sign of strength. Whether it’s reaching out to a trusted friend, a family member, or a professional, seeking support can be the first step toward healing. You don’t have to carry this burden alone.

“Trusting God doesn’t mean ignoring your struggles.”

Many Christians with anxiety struggle with the misconception that if they were truly trusting God, they wouldn’t feel anxious at all. But trusting God doesn’t mean pretending everything is okay when it’s not. It means bringing your struggles to Him, leaning on His strength, and seeking the help you need to heal. For instance, faith can provide comfort and a sense of purpose, while therapy can offer practical tools and strategies. My clients often wish they could remind their past selves that faith and therapy can go hand in hand and that true healing usually involves both.

“You don’t have to have it all figured out.”

Anxiety often stems from a need for control or certainty. My clients frequently reflect on how much pressure they put on themselves to have all the answers and to avoid making mistakes. They wish they could go back and tell their past selves that it’s okay not to have everything figured out. Life is a journey, and taking things one step at a time is okay. Sometimes, the most important thing you can do is be kind to yourself and trust that you are doing your best.

“You are stronger than you think.”

Anxiety has a way of making you feel small and powerless. But over time, my clients have realized that they are much stronger than they ever gave themselves credit for. They’ve learned that facing their fears and taking small, consistent steps toward healing is a true testament to their inner strength. They wish they could return and remind their past selves that they have the resilience and courage to overcome their challenges. You, too, have this strength within you.

Embracing Healing and Moving Forward

You may find yourself in a place where anxiety feels overwhelming, but know that there is hope. The journey may not be easy, but it is possible. Healing often requires a combination of faith, professional support, and self-compassion. Take a moment to think about what your future self might want to say to you now. What words of encouragement or wisdom would they share? Embrace this hope and move forward with confidence.

If you’re feeling uncertain about the professional support options for managing anxiety, it’s natural to want more information. This might involve understanding the various therapy approaches, counseling techniques, or ways to connect with the right mental health professional who can provide the support you need on your path to healing. If you’re ready to start your journey toward healing and peace, remember you’re not alone. We’re here to help. Scripture Reflection: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” – Psalm 34:18. This powerful reminder encourages us, even in our darkest moments, we are not alone. It speaks to the comforting presence of God in times of struggle, offering hope and reassurance to those dealing with anxiety.
